Beijing Cuts CO2 By Nearly 16.5mt in Seven Years

(May 23)--The successful biding for the Olympic Games did not only promote the significant expansion in Beijing’s green coverage ratio but also strengthened the Municipality’s carbon sequestration ability. From 2001 and until the end of 2007, Beijing’s green area had increased by 10,000ha (150,000mu), with the existing trees and lawn area expanding by 22.71 million trees and 46.52 million sq.m respectively. In addition, the green area coverage ratio in the urban area of the Municipality was 43% and the per capita green area had reached 480,000sq.m. In the seven years since Beijing was awarded the Olympics, its carbon sequestration has approached 16.481mt.
